Div 3C West Final vs Aberaeron - 19/5/2017

                    LEAGUE WEST 3 C……………..CUP FINAL.

                       ABERAERON    8    LLANDYBIE   20.

The much awaited fourth clash of the season with the West 3C Cup waiting on the outcome. Llandybie had come from behind in two of the three other encounters but could not afford to give Aberaeron a head start this time.                                                                                                          An early break through the centre by Aberaeron caught Llandybie cold but the kick ahead was covered by Ben Featherstone who cleared safely. The first scrum of the evening and Llandybie’s power pack pushed Aberaeron back twenty yards. Llandybie gained a penalty which they put to touch . Hooker Rhys Cann found Merlyn McClelland in the line out and Llandybie set up a driving maul gaining thirty yards. Scrum half Nathan Peters, who’s service was excellent all evening, put the ball wide with full back Josh Williams joining the line to feed right winger Dafydd Nicholas to break the line and come round under the posts for the first score converted by Aled Tommason after five minutes.                                                                                                                 Aberaeron attacked down the right but AledTommason cleared his lines to touch at halfway.  Aberaeron infringed at the line out and Tommason kicked the penalty. Aber had a penalty soon after but missed the kick. Aberaerongained some momentum and kept on the attack for 10 minutes but could not breach the Llandybie defence with big hits from full back Williams , Nathaniel Butler ,Shon Davies and McClelland.  After 30 mins Llandybie went on the attack with a fly hack from Featherstone rebounding off a defender. Rhys Cann was on the loose ball in a flashLlandybie recycling to captain Rhydian Jones who took the tackle to offload to fly half  Leighton Rees to canter in under the posts, Tommason again converted to lead 17 – 0.   Aberaeron put in a lot of forward pressure and Tommason was yellow carded for a professional foul and soon after Nathaniel Butler saw yellow for tackling with no arms. Llandybie worked hard to contain the Aber rushes and reached half time with no points conceded.  With two men down Llandybie were hard pressed but fought for every ball. An early penalty for Aber was converted by fly half Rhodri Jenkins but he missed another soon after. James Tommason was lively in the line outand the loose, but Llandybie’s tackling was top notch with Rhydian Jones, Shon Davies and McClelland showing the way. The front row of props Dai Lloyd, Keenan Jones and hooker Cann got around the field well in defence with Lloyd very impressive. Leighton Rees was just wide with a drop goal and Aber missed another penalty. Johnny Harris was up quickly in the centre and tackled well, getting a locked jaw in the process but carried on once it was released. Llandybie got back to full strength only to have Rees yellow carded for offside at his first offence. More pressure from Aberaeron and with superior numbers scored a try out wide. Cann was lost with a head injury replaced by Dan Brooks with Aber hammering away at the Llandybie line but they could not cross because of the outstanding defence. Going forward good driving from the Llandybie pack and Aberaeron gave away another penalty converted by Tommason. Cerith Lilburn, Layton Davies, Alex Wigley and Mathew Meredith came on for Llandybie but it made no difference to the defensive effort by the team.  Llandybie put in some good defensive kicks with good chasing by Nicholas, Harris and Featherstone. Some fantastic tackling from Llandybie as a team effort was the extra factor to win them this game. A mass brawl near the end, started by an Aberaeron player resulted in a yellow and red for LLandybie and a yellow for Aber. This was an outstanding defensive performance by the red and blacks who played thirty minutes of this game with 13 and fourteen men. The win completed the League and Cup double for LLandybie with the team giving the credit to coaches Gareth and Richard Davies who’s hard work galvanised the team.                                Final score was  Aberaeron   8  Llandybie  20.
