Match report - Aberaeron (Cup)

LLANDYBIE    23       ABERAERON  27

Match report by Charles Cann

This West 3c Cup match was the third meeting of the season with Llandybie just coming out on top in the two league fixtures. Aberaeron came with a very heavy pack and the early exchanges were pretty even with the visitors kicking long whenever Llandybie came into their twenty two. Aberaeron had a penalty for a high tackle after 15 mins slotted by Rhodri Jenkins. The home side were looking very lethargic after their exertions the previous week against Bynea. Llandybie made headway with a carry by Lyndon Davies but the ball was lost and the Aber fly half pushed his side sixty yards downfield with a huge kick. Aber play was pick and go and they forced their way over for a try by Lewis Donekay converted by Jenkins. From another drive Aber scored again from Morgan Llewellyn again converted by Jenkins from some weak tackling. Llandybie could not get going and the Aberaeron defence was solid. Llandybie looked all at sea and under the cosh and half time arrived with the hosts     17 -0 adrift.
The half time huddle with the hosts was the coaches laying down a few home truths and demanding more effort and physicality to their play. They would have to come from behind again as they had in Aberaeron. The second half started with a breakaway try from Aber by Lewis Donekay fending off two poor tackles to run in from thirty yards. 22 – 0 down Llandybie had a mountain to climb. From some loose play in midfield fly half Richard Davies fed prop Keenan Jones who stepped inside the defender , with good hands offloaded to second row Merlyn McClelland in the wing position and he stepped inside to score a good try converted by Aled Tommason. LLandybie gained a penalty for holding on in the tackle and Tommason took the points. From the restart a good take by Layton Davies with a good kick from Leighton Rees pushed Llandybie into Aber’s twenty two. Aber were penalised for a high tackle and Tommason slotted the kick. Lyndon Davies ,Rhydian Jones and Nathaniel Butler were taking the play to the visitors and Tommason and Chris Powell were tackling hard. Matthew Meredith in for Dai Lloyd scrummaged well but tired due to lack of match play but kept going till replaced by Ethan Walters.
Another Layton Davies take and Richard Davies pushed Llandybie 40 yards downfield, with the ball running loose. Ben Featherstone picked up and swerved left to offload in the tackle to flanker Nathaniel Butler who switched on the afterburners to outpace the defence to score in the corner, converted with a fine kick by Tommason. James Tommason replaced the hard working McClelland. Another kick downfield with Featherstone giving chase forcing a hurried kick to touch and from the lineout Llandybie moved across field and a good drive forced Aber into another penalty which Tommason kicked to put Llandybie into the lead for the first time 23-22. Aberaeron used the power of their pack to push the hosts back and despite some backs to the wall defence by Llandybie , Aber scored in the last two minutes from Owain Wozencraft. A game of two halfs with the hosts almost pulling of the win but Aber just deserved the result. A number of players below par for Llandybie with the coaches expecting a reaction in training next week.
