Match report - Bynea 1/4/2017

BYNEA  5     LLANDYBIE  18

Division West 3C Champions Llandybie travelled to third place Bynea hoping to complete the league season unbeaten with 12 victories in 12 league matches. They were expecting a hard encounter from a good Bynea outfit, in what proved to be a great team effort.                                                                                   From the kick off Number 8 Merlyn McClelland took the game to the hosts , let battle commence.  Both teams went in with big hits and no quarter given. The visitors had an early penalty which was just wide and soon after Aled Tommason hit the upright with another effort. Both sides put the ball wide but the defences were up very quickly. Llandybie were awarded another penalty which Tommason converted.  Bynea missed a penalty soon after and from a long clearance by Llandybie the Bynea full back knocked on. Llandybie put their backs to the left with the full back Nicholas joining the line but  from the scrum McClelland went right and handed to scrum half Leighton Rees who dummied and went inside and offloaded to winger Ceri Davies who made ground and passed inside to McClelland who made the line with two defenders attached to score a good try, converted by Tommason. Bynea were penalised for holding on and  Tommason slotted the penalty to put the visitors 13 nil ahead.  Bynea came firing back with good carries but the defence of Llandybie was sound with good tackles from Shon Davies, Nathaniel Butler and fly half Richard Davies. Bynea managed a good break down the right hand side but hooker Rhys Cann chased back to take the attacker into touch. Rhys Evans made a good break and second row James Tommason also made ground and a good drive by the pack resulted in another penalty which Tommason missed on this occasion. Half time 0 -13 to visitors.           In the second period Bynea attacked from the off advancing to Llandybie’s twenty two but the ball was lost and from broken play James Tommason offloaded to back row Layton Davies who shot through a gap and made forty yards offloading to hooker Rhys Cann in support, having prop Dai Lloyd and flanker Shon Davies outside him but delayed his pass and the ball went to ground. From another infringement Tommason kicked to touch and from the lineout Llandybie formed a driving maul which drove Bynea back thirty yards, terrific to watch. Good carries from Butler,Lloyd and prop Keenan Jones kept Bynea on the back foot. Bynea’s winger  intercepted a pass and  was clear but Ben Featherstone came in off his wing and chased him down making a good tackle. Llandybie put the ball wide and a good exchange of passes by Rhys Evans and  Featherstone put Evans over the whitewash but the referee disallowed it as he thought the ball was held up. Bynea attacked and for once the visitors defence rushed up too quickly and left a gap which Bynea found and despite a desperate tackle by full back Dafydd Nicholas Arran Gingel scored for the hosts. Bynea kept attacking and good tackling by Layton Davies and Keenan Jones forced the hosts into touch. It was all hands to the pumps as Bynea tried everything to break down the Llandybie defence. The back row of Butler, Davies and McClelland were outstanding but every player put in a shift.  From a Bynea attack Butler fielded a chip ahead and with his way barred by four defenders kicked ahead for Featherstone who grubber kicked over to score a good try and seal the victory. A physical game with a couple of minor dust ups but Llandybie  deserved the win.
